Most people want to move more to be fit. Lots of people take up exercise because it sounds like something they should be doing—a good idea, but missing a key ingredient. Those who prepare themselves for success in an event or enjoy a way of life are actually doing it right.
I am not a health and fitness expert, but I have thought about this a lot, and you can probably benefit from what I am going to share.
Life Goals
Exercise is a tactic or set of actions to help you achieve a desired result. That result is fundamental to everything. What are you moving, stretching, and lifting for? Do you want to run a short race or marathon in a certain time? Do you want to be able to walk long distances on hilly ground during your vacations to exotic places? Maybe you just want to be strong enough to handle your own suitcases at the airport and play with your three little grandkids when you are in your 60s. You need to define your health and fitness plans before you start any program. Make sure you consult a health professional before doing any exercise routine and discuss all your health concerns with them.
Why Train?
Once you know what you are aiming for this year or for the next 20 years, you can find a training plan and perhaps a coach to help you achieve your goal. Everything you do will support your defined goal, and your progress on this journey will have more meaning. You will be more motivated to stick to it and give it your best because it's part of the grand vision you have in your mind: being strong, being fast, being capable, and being independent.
Visualizing Future Health
Imagine yourself as a person over 60 on vacation, enjoying walks of 10 km a day without pain. How about getting on the floor and playing with your grandkids without feeling like you need to stay in bed the next day to recover from fatigue? One of my favorite things I want to enjoy as I age involves eating delicious food of all kinds with family and not worrying about my blood sugar spiking or blood pressure being a concern. I definitely don't want to take prescription meds before and after meals every day just to survive.
My training plan envisions how I will age over the current decade and the next 20 years. I try to anticipate potential challenges and what a quality life looks like today. By estimating possible health problems and establishing health goals for my future, I gain a clearer idea of what I need to do. My personal fitness goals involve being as strong, active, and drug-free as possible for the rest of my life. I don’t want to depend on others for help with daily chores. I do want to be as awesome as I can be for every year of my life.
So, the next time you find yourself doing some exercise routine, put your full effort into it and remind yourself that you are not just working out, you are training for an Awesome Life!
