Build A System for Goals

By Shazad

“If you can’t describe what you are doing as a process, you don’t know what you’re doing.” >> W. Edwards Deming

We all have goals we want to achieve. We want to accomplish big goals and reach milestones in life, whether that means completing higher education, getting married, raising kids, or starting a business. All of us strive for some significant outcome in life, and we think we just need to “do some things” to get to our destination. What if there was a better way? A proven method for actually getting things done that wasn’t just a bunch of loosely connected tasks?

The better way, and the only way to properly achieve a desired outcome that is even slightly complex or large, is to use the Systems approach. By studying how various elements in our personal lives and professional domains are connected, we can better understand the right process to achieve the results we want. We can avoid just doing ‘busy work’ or garbage tasks that either don’t matter or, even worse, break things in the process and put us further behind than when we started!

Everything in nature follows a systematic pattern, a clue that becomes evident as we observe plants, animals, and even the solar system. Things don’t just happen in the world around us. They follow certain guidelines, formulas, and natural laws, and often move gradually through time and space.

Getting in shape is a popular goal many people pursue, and it’s a great example of using a systematic approach to improving fitness rather than just adopting ‘better habits’ or doing a bunch of things every day. If you examine what’s getting in the way of achieving your ideal health and what’s available to help you improve, you start seeing things clearly. You can look at potential hurdles or dead ends in the process of improving your physical fitness, nutrition, and mental well-being. You choose how you are going to optimize daily choices and connect the dots. You see the bigger picture of your overall process to improve the key aspects of your well-being. Once you see the connection between your physical exercise and daily nutrition and your mental state, you make better choices to keep everything aligned. You also don’t aim for simplistic metrics like ‘lose some weight’ or ‘lift more at the gym’. By getting specific with your overall goals and breaking them down into daily and weekly progress, you can see how you are doing and where you can make small but meaningful adjustments to keep moving forward.

With a systems approach to a big goal or project, you are more likely to hit the target because you see how your time, resources, mindset, and daily choices affect your outcomes. You become better at forming and maintaining habits because they are small parts of the bigger machine you have built to take you where you need to go. What’s the next goal you will apply a system to?
