How to Live a Richer Life

By Ahsan

“Slow down, you move too fast

You got to make the morning last

Just kicking down the cobblestones

Looking for fun and feeling groovy”

Simon & Garfunkel

We live in a fast-paced world and equate speed with productivity and progress. Our success hinges on efficiency and is anchored by using new, better and faster systems than ever.

Now, picture a time when life was less hectic for you and compare that with the last time you had one of those fast-paced but super productive days. Which day did you prefer, and which day do you want to have more of?

My guess is the best day is the one when you were not rushing to and fro, but instead felt tranquil.

In this slower space, you realize that life's true beauty often lies in its quieter moments. As we navigate through life’s fast lane, we frequently forget the importance of slowing down to truly enjoy and appreciate our experiences.

There are three profound benefits of embracing a slower lifestyle.

1. Enhanced Mindfulness:

Slowing down allows us to cultivate mindfulness, helping us become more present in each moment. As the writer Thich Nhat Hanh says, "Life is available only in the present moment." When we take the time to breathe and observe, we unlock deeper insights into our surroundings and ourselves. For example, dedicating just a few minutes each day to mindful meditation or simply savouring a cup of tea can enhance our awareness and appreciation of life's simple pleasures.

2. Strengthened Relationships:

A slower pace fosters deeper connections with others, allowing us to engage meaningfully rather than superficially. As author Leo Buscaglia once noted, "Love is always open arms. If you close your arms about love, you will find that you are left holding only yourself." Taking the time for heartfelt conversations, family dinners, or lingering catch-ups with friends enriches our relationships.

3. Improved Well-Being:

Slowing down can lead to better mental and physical health. Research has shown that a slower pace reduces stress, promotes relaxation, and fosters a sense of well-being. "You can’t rush something you want to last forever," says an anonymous quote, encapsulating the essence of nurturing our health.

A great example is indulging in nature walks rather than hasty runs – the former not only boosts physical fitness but also enhances emotional resilience by allowing us to connect with our environment.

In a world that often equates speed with success, it’s vital to remember that a well-lived life is truly not one to be rushed.

Embracing a slower lifestyle opens the door to mindfulness, stronger relationships, and improved well-being, ultimately enriching our experience of life itself.

A richer life that is enriched by the way you live it consciously and slightly slowly.

As we blend moments of stillness into our hectic days, we may discover that the journey is just as valuable as the destination.

Just like the song says: “Slow down, you’re moving too fast”

And yes, that journey is worth slowly savouring. We are all a hop, skip and a jump from the end of the song.
