How To Develop Your Warrior Mindset

August 18, 2021 Shazad Ahmad

By Shazad

“We don't rise to the level of our expectations, we fall to the level of our training.”

Archilochus

Thankfully, most of us are not involved in actual military conflicts or physical battles during the week. Hopefully, we can avoid this for the rest of our lives as well. So why talk about being a “Warrior”? There is a benefit from learning what the Warrior traditions have to teach us and how to apply those things to our everyday lives. The alternative is to spend your life as a “Worrier” fearing everything and everyone because you don’t know how to handle situations. Let me share.3 simple ways you can “WIN the “battles” of everyday life and become a Warrior.

First, have a very compelling reason to live your life and spend your energy the way you do each day. Make every day a disciplined day of purpose and action that is fulfilling your mission in life. This will prevent you from just trying to ‘get through’ the day or ‘surviving’ another workday, etc. Make the days count and they will be more enjoyable.

Second, prepare for and expect difficulty, challenges, obstacles, and even temporary failures. Rehearse some common or expected challenges in your mind and how you can manage the situation if they occur. This inoculates you to some of the shock and sadness when you actually face this setback. It also prepares you to respond and recover more quickly.

Third, develop your confidence by getting things done early in the day and challenging yourself over time. When you complete simpler tasks early and work to achieve harder tasks over time, you feel better about yourself and can be proud of yourself. Having constantly challenging projects to work on and learn from prevents you from becoming too comfortable with your current abilities and helps you stretch so you are always improving even if it is just 1% each week. You need to be challenged regularly so you know how strong and capable you really are.

Many people want to just enjoy a comfortable life without worrying about the future or doing hard things. They think everything will be ‘fine’ if they don’t think about what could go wrong and plan for it. Such people are usually the first to be shocked and often lose hope in themselves as well as the world when something does take an unexpected turn. Your physical, mental and emotional well-being depends on you developing your inner WARRIOR so you are alert, prepared and constantly improving your skills.

How Important Is Purpose In Your Life?

August 11, 2021 Shazad Ahmad

By Ahsan

So here we are some 16 months since the world became engulfed in a massive global change. Life is indeed different and will likely be on a new path from now on. That said, we all are doing our best to adjust and carry on with the business of living life.

Along the way, we have likely had some serious self-reflection about what matters most to us. We have probably thought about how we should spend our days and moments to live our most Awesome Life.

In other words, more than ever before, we were asked by life to answer the question:

“What is the purpose of your life?”

What is the answer for you?

I bet that today is a great time to visit or revisit this question because the benefits to your life are too significant to ignore.

About six years ago, we published our book Awesome Life, on Amazon. The subtitle is Create The Life You Always Wanted And Soar With Purpose. A good life comes from having a purpose, just like the hero in every story or movie has a mission. As self-evident as this concept may be, we can all use a reminder, especially in times like these.

Don’t forget, you are the hero in the story of your life!

Having a purpose in life might just be the missing piece of the puzzle. But, as said by Dr. Alan Zimmerman, author of Pivot, "the purpose of life is a life of purpose."

My takeaway from this message is that life is like being on a sailboat where the wind causes the boat to move in a specific direction. However, the rudder is a crucial component of the sailboat. Like having a purpose, it allows you to take the circumstances of life (the wind) and manipulate the direction you want to go (purpose in life).

Your purpose in life is your rudder on the sailboat of life!

With purpose, you will have two outstanding benefits that will set you on the course of an Awesome Life:

1.     A life with direction

2.     A life with meaning

And you know what else? Having a purpose in life will cover 97% of all the other things you try to do well daily! It will cover achieving your goals, attaining happiness, cultivating a winner's mindset, fostering excellent relationships, spiritual connection to your Creator, helping your fellow man, and even make you a better person!

That's a lot of knock-on effect, wouldn't you say?

So here is a plan to help you answer or reinvent the purpose of your life:

Action Steps:

1.     Make yourself a cup of tea and sit down with your journal and give yourself a good one hour of quiet time to think and brainstorm some ideas.

2.     Then, at the top of your page, write down "My Purpose In Life."

3.     Now make two columns, one that says "Things I can do for myself" and the other "Things I can do for others."

4.     Start writing things as they come to your mind under each column, and don't judge them. Let the ideas flow.

5.     Look at what starts to pop out at you as exciting, not just enjoyable, from the completed lists.

6.     Circle the ones that you really like and do the next step: Write down your Awesome Life Purpose: ALP

7.     Here is a template for your consideration:

My life’s purpose consists of (your list of things you might do for others)

I also make my life’s purpose (your list of things you will do for yourself)

When I live my life with purpose, I feel (write down the emotions you will achieve and state of mind you will be in by living your life with purpose).

 Here is an example:

“My life's purpose consists of being helpful to my family and friends. I also make it my life's purpose to improve my skills in my work life and personal life. When I live my life with purpose, I feel happy and motivated.”

Perhaps now more than ever, we can all benefit from thinking about the purpose of our life.

The benefits of having direction and meaning in life are genuinely too big to ignore.

If you are feeling rudderless, go make that cup of tea. If you know someone who might need to read this article, please share it with them.

Be Awesome, and may all your life be filled with purpose!

What About Life Before Death?

July 28, 2021 Shazad Ahmad

By Ahsan

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Winston Churchill

There was this farmer who always won the best corn prize in his county fair year after year. What was his secret? He did something that surprised the reporter of the local TV station who asked this very question.

The farmer replied he gave all his neighbours his foundation seeds to also have good corn crops that were robust and tasty. The reporter, a little surprised, asked, why would you do that? Why would the farmer be giving his best seeds to his competition?

The farmer said that might be, but it works best in all our interests because the wind blows the pollen from the corn across farms. The cross-pollination of good seeds affects all farmers in a beneficial way. The better one farmer’s corn is, the better all of the corn becomes. In other words, the farmer understood that if he is to do well, he must help his neighbours to do well also.

This story reminds me of this verse in the Holy Quran about corn:
The similitude of those who spend their wealth for the cause of Allah is like the similitude of a grain of corn which grows seven ears, in each ear a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies it further for whomsoever He pleases; and Allah is Bountiful, All-Knowing. ⎯The Holy Quran, Chapter 2 verse 262

The wealth we have to share is not just money. It can be many things including our time, our experience, and our advice. The rewards that we get could be in the future or even in the present through a life well-lived and a feeling of personal contentment. This is the ‘wealth’ that keeps growing in your life like a healthy cornfield.

So here is the takeaway.

This lesson of life illustrated by the corn farmer allows us to really live before we die through generosity of spirit and attitude.

The essence of a life well-lived is to have helped others around us, whether by a smile, spending time to give them company or encouragement, spending in the way of the less fortunate, building relationships, or just building people. The possibilities are infinite!

The clock of life is ticking by for all of us. The final moment is never known. This is why we need to live before we die. It’s natural to think about life after death but what about life before death?

How might you define it for yourself?

Take some time out today to answer that fundamental question and make your remaining days really matter!

Action Steps:

  1. On a piece of paper, write the question down. What matters most to me for my life to be lived before I die?

  2. Then, do some brainstorming and write down any answers that pop into your mind under that heading. Look at that list and see what you feel inspired to focus on.

  3. Edit your list to make a final list full of the most inspiring ideas you will try to live out!

Just like an ear of corn contains within it a field of corn, you too are filled with an ability to multiply the good in your life and the lives of many others.  This just might be the secret of a good life before you die. What say you?

What Will Your Sacrifice Be?

July 21, 2021 Shazad Ahmad
unsplash-image-TMj1c5wlO3k.jpg

By Shazad

Life is a series of trade-offs and decisions also known as SACRIFICES. In youth, we sacrifice our time for knowledge, experience, and then money. In our middle years of life, we trade some of that saved income to get time back until we reach our Senior years when all of the focus is about gaining more time in the day by sacrificing our wealth and possessions. It’s a delicate balancing act and no two lives are the same. The well-educated and the poor farmer in a small village somewhere all make sacrifices all day long.

It’s necessary to make these decisions and to do so with intention, wisdom, and the future in mind. We can have all the things we need in life as long as we are willing to make the required sacrifice to obtain them. There is no lasting pleasure in getting things we did not have to struggle for and there is no great accomplishment that isn’t preceded by a series of hurdles and forks in the road. Every choice we make cuts off another path. Sometimes it’s permanent and there’s no going back. Other times it is simply not practical to backtrack to the point we made a choice and do things a different way. Think of a boiled egg that cannot be made raw again. In contrast, a decision about which subject to major in University is something that is more flexible in terms of the decisions you make.

Think of your life as intentional decisions made in your own best interest and the interests of everyone you care about. Live with the knowledge that you are making sacrifices that are part of your greater purpose and make them boldly with no regrets. In the end, your sacrifices will be worth it.

How To Have A Good Day Every Day

June 30, 2021 Shazad Ahmad
unsplash-image-muS2RraYRuQ.jpg

By Ahsan

The way your day goes can really be unpredictable. Sometimes you have an ordinary day where it's all about work and no play, and other times you're on a mission, like shopping for someone's birthday gift.

“Great days add up to great weeks, and that starts off great months and a great year ahead.” B A

Depending on what happens during the day, you may feel like the day went well or not so well.

In fact, one of the most popular phrases we hear from folks that meet us is “how is your day going?” Of course, the answer to that question can and should be it is going great if you understand how to make every day a great day.

Think about this, even people that you would think should have a great day everyday may not be living their life this way. Tragically, we see this a lot when we hear about famous people. They have it all, money, fame, friends and adoration. You might like to look up the 1970s heart-throb David Cassidy. He had it all. A TV Show, a music career and all the trimmings. When he passed away, his daughter said his last words were “so much time wasted.”

So here is a set of ideas that you can try and see if they work for you:

First off, when you wake up in the morning, take a few moments to simply say to yourself that you intend to have a great day. The power of setting your intentions will shield you from minor setbacks and annoyances that indeed pop up for all of us. Let's say someone is rude to you or you are late for an appointment because of traffic. Instead of letting these things disturb you and your intention, you simply recall your intention and let these minor annoyances slip off your back like water on a duck.

Next, after your intention is set, list two or three things you want to get done today: high payoff activities for your work or business or family. In one sense, when we are productive, we often feel fulfilled. So, rather than just perform work expected on any given day, try to identify a few things that will be really impactful. Maybe it is calling a client or perhaps doing some marketing for new clients, or it is cooking a great meal for the family instead of the usual same old.

While you are at it, you can also add in one thing you will do later in the day that is just for you. Maybe you want to go for a bike ride, or call an old friend, or watch a show on TV or whatever floats your boat. The idea here is to do something that gives you personal joy and happiness. Too often, we forget to do this and then wonder why we are not having a good day.

So far, you may notice I am asking you to set your intentions, identify a few activities that relate to your practical responsibilities to others in life, identify one activity that is just for your personal amusement and, in a sense, to do all of this before you jump out of bed in the morning.

This could be the best three minutes you will spend all day!

And here is the final tip: mainly for the keeners, the dreamers, the achievers and the Sea-Hawks!

Check-in several times a day to see how you are feeling and performing.

What does this mean?

Are you feeling relaxed and happy?

You should because that was your intention in the morning. If not, go inward and give yourself a pep-talk.

Are you feeling productive?

You should because you identified a few things to check off as done and even set aside something just for you. If not, work on your tasks with a feeling of gratitude for having the health to do it and make sure you schedule your personal fun item before the clock runs out and you get too tired.

All work and no play make Jack and Jill dull and sporadically happy. Every day is a great day if you intend to make it so, fill it with a bit of productivity and something that blows your hair back.

Actions:

  1. Do the above every day: your morning should begin before your jump out of bed. 180 seconds is all it takes.

  2. Make a list of High Pay Off Activities to refer to. You know what they are, but a list can concentrate your focus on ideas.

  3. Make another list of your hobbies, joys and whimsical dreams. This can be very helpful to remind you that life is indeed short and putting off your personal pleasures means you lived a few days when you could have lived them all.

It’s never too late. Start now and make every day a great day!

How To Keep Your Positive Attitude Throughout The Day

June 9, 2021 Shazad Ahmad
unsplash-image-RAkQAMrjOvk.jpg

By Ahsan

Two friends are walking down the street, and one of them trips on a banana peel. Then he slides into a muddy puddle, and his entire outfit is ruined. The other friend helps him up and tries to make him feel better. Standing up, looking at his muddy clothes, he let out a big laugh. So this morning, I promised myself to enjoy my day even if I slip on a banana and slide into a muddy puddle. And the two friends carried on.

Like most people, you are always trying to make the most of your day and enjoy it as much as you can. After all, today is all we have. We may not have this evening or let alone tomorrow.

Perhaps you are the kind of person that takes a few minutes in the morning to set your intentions and visualize the things you plan on doing for the next 16 hours before you go to bed again. In other words, you plan on having a great day and are grateful for your blessings.

This approach is a great way to start the day; however, something or someone messes up your state of mind every now and then. You went from chill and exuberant to tense and triggered. You lose your groove, and sometimes you don't find your way back for hours, days, or even longer!

As long as things go your way or mostly your way, your peace of mind stays intact.

So if things go off track and you find yourself feeling less relaxed and optimistic, what can you do to get that morning mindset back?

Please think and then read below. What should you do?

Here is a simple and effective idea:

When things in your outer world agitate you, go back inward. Take a private time out. Remind yourself of your morning intentions and affirmations:

Just say something like the following:

I am a happy and relaxed person.

My mind and spirit work for me.

I am resilient and full of potential.

My Creator is with me.

I live in this moment, where everything is just fine.

I am happy, healthy, and peaceful.

Make this a daily ritual. Start your day with your version of setting your intentions and visualize all the things you plan on doing. See yourself being effective, happy, and composed. Then take several personal time-outs to check inwards and replay the morning message to your mind.
To keep your positive attitude throughout the day, even if things fall apart, you got to figure out a way to get back on your feet. Just like you can't randomly exercise and expect to build your best health, you can’t just set your intentions only once at the start of the day.

Try this for the next 5 days, and let us know if you found it to be a helpful idea.

How Do You Look At Things?

April 21, 2021 Shazad Ahmad

By Shazad

“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

Wayne Dyer

This quote is my inspiration for this post and I think it’s very timely given our current situation with the pandemic, the hardship of lockdown, the uncertainty of the future, and life in general. How are you looking at things right now? What thoughts came across your mind today about what kind of day or week it’s going to be? Why did you think that way?

We all want things to be different. To be better than they were yesterday. Sometimes, it’s as simple as changing the way we choose to look at life and opportunities in front of us. Are you scanning for problems and more trouble coming your way or are you preparing for a better version of the future? How about a better version of yourself because you learned how to be more resilient or patient? It comes down to the way you look at things and the story you tell yourself about what you see.

It Was Always Up to You

April 7, 2021 Shazad Ahmad

By Shazad

“In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility.” Eleanor Roosevelt

You could blame your parents, society, your friends, or someone else for where you are in life. You could also say it’s ‘fate’ or ‘destiny’ and that you are just a passenger or unwilling participant in someone else’s grand plan for your life. That would be the easy and childish way to look at things.

Great people do great things because they realize they have a responsibility to step up and become who they were supposed to be. We are all potentially great people from birth. The difference is that only some of us realize this and even fewer people take the necessary actions to transform the potential into reality.

Stop blaming, making excuses, and looking for someone else to change your life. Take hold of what time remains and write your story each day. Let your Awesomeness manifest itself in your thoughts and words. This is what it means to be a Leader. No one is coming to make things happen for you. There is no superhero rescue or Divine revelation you need to wait for to move forward. This is both terrifying and emancipating at the same time. The choice has always been yours to figure out. It’s your move.

What Is The Better Thought?

March 3, 2021 Shazad Ahmad

By Ahsan

Have you ever been stuck in stinking thinking?

When you talk to yourself, and the conversation is disempowering, what can you do to turn things around?

What have you done in the past to turn things around?

If you look back, you will likely find that you started to make a comeback by turning your back to the "weak thought" and instead chose a "better thought."

This, my dear friend, is the way to accelerate your mojo, to put some pep in your step, to sing your song and bit adieu to stinking thinking.

Whenever you feel like you are in a funk and would rather be at the disco, you've got to change the radio station in your head and go to "Better Thought" FM.

In fact, here is a Top Ten list of “Better Thoughts” for you to listen to:

Make sure to save them to your playlist:

  1. "I've been through tougher situations, and I will get through this too."

  2. “All things are possible with the blessings and skills that I have, with God’s grace.”

  3. "I have friends that I can rely on, including myself.”

  4. “Ain’t no mountain high enough. Ain’t no valley low enough. I will keep on trying!”

  5. “I think I can, I think I can. I know I can, I know I can”.

  6. “Tomorrow, Tomorrow, I love you Tomorrow. Tomorrow is just a day away.”

  7. "Don't stop believing. Hang on to that feeling."

  8. “A little less talk and a little more action.”

  9. “ Doe a deer, a female deer. Ray, a drop of golden sun. Me, a name I call myself.”

  10. "We are the champions, my friend. We'll keep on fighting to the end."

What's Your Story?

February 22, 2021 Shazad Ahmad

By Shazad

“Story, as it turns out, was crucial to our evolution -- more so than opposable thumbs. Opposable thumbs let us hang on; story told us what to hang on to.” Lisa Cron, Wired for Story

We all have one and we keep repeating it in our heads on daily basis. Some people experience a life event that causes them to change or enhance their story. Sometimes it’s good embellishments and positive explanations.  For many, their story has very negative tones and beliefs like they are some kind of victim” or hopeless “sinner” that cannot be redeemed. This is very damaging to their lives and unsurprisingly, makes them very unhappy.

When you realize that you are telling yourself a story all day long, you can change it.  We all need better stories to appreciate and enjoy. Need proof? Why do we enjoy movies and fictional stories in books? There is something in the way the characters are presenting something to our brain that compels us to keep watching or reading that book.  Even with the best actors, a poorly written storyline will not be a good movie. It’s the same with our lives. We cannot be happy and have fulfilling lives if we are telling ourselves poorly written stories of despair and a lack of control over the quality of our lives.  The ‘script’ running in your head needs to be better. This is, after all, your life philosophy, your “mission statement” and has to be aligned with your values. You cannot let someone else write it for you and you cannot let it be random events that shape how you feel each day.

It’s time for a better narrative to Live an Awesome Life. You want to change but how can you do this? Study the voice in your head and write down what you believe about yourself. Next, write out what you want to be the story of your life while you are still alive.  What have you been through and seen in the world? How many people do you know and what are your favourite things in this world? How do you want to be understood and what qualities do you want to shine brightly for all to see? Third, start thinking, acting, and telling your new story every day.  You can start by repeating positive quotes, affirmations, and “plot” lines in your mind.  Make your personal story bold, genuine, and truly engaging with a touch of humour. This is how you become the hero of your own life and save the day, every single day! What will your story be?

Here Is Why You Are Okay Even If Other People Say You Are Not

January 27, 2021 Shazad Ahmad

By Ahsan

If you want to make someone’s day, give them a compliment. On the other hand, if you want to make someone feel lousy about themselves, all you need to do is give them a well-intentioned comment of “constructive criticism.”

Why do words of criticism, fault-finding, and chastisement bother us so much? What’s going on here?

For starters, we feel bad because there may be truth to such comments. We also find ourselves facing a bit of reality¾we are not perfect!

So you feel bad because deep down inside, you know that you are not okay. The approval of others is what has power over how we feel about ourselves.

Don’t blame yourself too much because this was taught to you. You were taught to feel good about yourself when others give you praise and bad about yourself when you get the other stuff.

As Anthony De Mello, author of Awareness, said, this approval acts like a drug. It makes you addicted like an addict is addicted to their drug of choice.

There isn't anything wrong with praise and approval except for needing it to feel okay about yourself.

Social media showing the perfect lives of everyday people just adds to this phenomenon. The richer you are, the more popular, muscular, successful you are, the happier you should be about yourself.

This issue can be solved once and for all if you look at criticism and your abilities differently.

One solution is to block out the comment made against you and ignore it because you have come to be aware that "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me." That might work, but it may not be as good as the next idea you are about to read.

Here is a little known solution to handle the feelings of inadequacies, shame, and frustrations instead:

Accept the critique with a smile and care less about it because you do not focus on your weaknesses. Instead, smile because you are being reminded to focus on your strengths.

The land of strengths is where all your joy, self-esteem, and purpose in life is waiting!

When you get away from the drug of approval and its impact on your sense of self-worth, you live an extraordinary life. By ignoring the ignorant who do not understand that we should all focus on our strengths and extraordinary talents to live triumphantly, you will be a more effective and well-adjusted human being.

Don’t dwell on your weaknesses and try to improve them! This will only lead to more frustration and a low opinion of yourself.

You can’t be good at everything? Embrace your strengths instead!

When you allow criticism to bother you, you limit your growth because you don’t see your strengths.

Don't ask a fish to climb a tree. He can't do it, and he will only die trying to.

Major in your majors. Find your strengths and build those.

When a person focuses on their strengths and uses them to produce results and value for others and themselves, the product is a healthy level of self-esteem, and who doesn’t need that?

So how do you do this? Just spend some time doing a bit of reflection and personal action:

Actions:

1.     Make a list of your strengths. And make a list of your weaknesses.

2.     Then scratch the list of your weaknesses with a big red X.

3.     Get some help from a friend, co-worker, or coach to help you identify your strengths as an added measure if needed.

4.     Think about those strengths and imagine how your life could change if you polish them up. Working on your strengths won't feel like work; it will feel like heaven.

5.     Spend time doing things that involve your strengths and extraordinary talents, so you live like a happy and productive human being that makes life look easy and are helpful to others in your orbit.

6.     Live from now on, thinking about how good you are at things and not how you need to fix yourself. Ain’t nobody got time for that!

7.     Lose the addiction of approval and teach people why this addiction is messing up their enjoyment of who they are and what they can be.

What Does Winning Look Like to You?

January 20, 2021 Shazad Ahmad

By Shazad

We all want to WIN in life. This could be defined in professional terms like “Winning” at work or in business. Perhaps you define it in personal themes like “Winning” in a relationship, marriage or a family. Whatever the word “WIN” means to you, you need to define it.

How much money do you need to have before you consider yourself a “Winner” in your finances or your wealth? How many degrees do you need to have “won” in education or learning? What is the point in your marriage where you consider yourself a “Winner” as a husband or wife? How do you know you have “won” the battle to achieve better health and fitness? These are not easy questions but they are necessary to ask yourself so you are clear on the essence of what it means to truly WIN.

Take some time to define how you determine “Winning” in each aspect of your life. Write down what it looks like, tastes like, and feels like. Be clear and vivid in your description of winning. Why? Because you can achieve the feeling of winning only when you know what winning means to you in a particular arena of life. When you do this, you can actually take action to achieve those “WINS”. You will also realize that “Winning” in life is more of a journey rather than a destination you reach one day. Enjoy the path and WIN the Day with your daily habits!

2021: Only What You Take With You

There is a scene in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back that I really love. It’s the one with Luke meeting Yoda for the first time and he starts training to be a Jedi. When he's done for the day, Luke notices a mysterious cave and he asks Yoda, "What's in there?"

Yoda replies, "Only what you take with you."

To achieve a better 2021 and beyond, you need to take only those tools, habits, and thoughts that can help you. Like Luke Skywalker, you must face yourself in the present and go forward with the best of your being. Take the lessons from the struggle and shortcomings of 2020 but don’t repeat the same mistakes. There’s no need to pack all of the sadness, worry, or sense of failure with you. This will weigh you down and result in destructive patterns making you reckless. and afraid.

Whenever you face a crisis, remember these wise words of Master Yoda:

“Fear is the path to the dark side…fear leads to anger… anger leads to hate… hate leads to suffering.”

Bring just the minimum amount, but the most important things with you. Your love, your courage, your wisdom, some patience, and a sense of moderation about people and events that will unfold. Don’t allow external events to blast you off into space with excessive joy or let negative people and news make you want to crawl deep into the earth due to sorrow and fear. Don’t lash out at everything that comes your way trying to deny or discredit it. Do not be the first one to take an offensive position on some information or event. You should develop your critical thinking skills more and confirm what is true versus opinion. Watch, listen, and try to understand what’s happening. Look for meaning and make it a habit to get a better perspective. Sometimes you will need to zoom in to focus on something. Other times you will need to zoom far out to get clarity and see the big picture.

Whatever happens, know that you can figure it out and manage the situation to the best of your abilities. Here comes 2021!

May the Force Be With You all!
