The Two Most Important Ingredients for Success

By Ahsan

“Success is not something you pursue. It’s something you attract by the person you become.”

Jim Rohn

Humans are wired to succeed. Our capacity to adapt, plan, and cooperate has allowed us to dominate the planet and create extraordinary progress.

Yet if success is so natural to us, why do so many people fall short of their potential?

The answer lies in two intertwined forces — behaviour and background. These two ingredients shape how far we go and how fast we get there.

Think for a moment about the people you would call “successful.” They might not all be billionaires or global leaders. Instead, many live balanced lives: they hold steady jobs or businesses, manage their finances wisely, and enjoy strong relationships with family and friends.

They have a sense of purpose, contribute meaningfully to their communities, and maintain optimism about their future.

Those less successful, by contrast, often struggle with instability, both financially and emotionally, and may lack a clear direction or confidence in shaping their lives.

Ingredient One: Behaviour Built on Beliefs

The first ingredient of success is what a person chooses to believe and how those beliefs shape daily behaviour. Success-oriented individuals embody values like discipline, persistence, optimism, and curiosity. They see themselves as works in progress—always learning, improving, and adapting.

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t—you’re right.” — Henry Ford

Successful people don’t wait for perfect conditions; they cultivate habits that generate progress.

They organize their time, pursue meaningful goals, and face setbacks as part of the learning process rather than as signs of failure.

Over time, these behaviours compound to create a stable foundation for success.

Ingredient Two: The Fortune of Circumstance

Still, behaviour alone doesn’t explain everything.

Behind every success story lies an invisible backdrop—the circumstances one is born into.

Where you live, the family that raises you, the values you absorb early in life, and the economic conditions that surround you—all shape your sense of possibility.

As researcher Robert Frank notes, “Talent and effort matter, but luck matters as well.”

A nurturing environment can accelerate your growth, while difficult beginnings can make the journey longer if not elusive.

Yet awareness of this second ingredient isn’t meant to discourage—it’s meant to empower.

When we recognize how background influences outcomes, we can consciously create better starting points for ourselves and others.

The Takeaway: Build Both Sides of the Equation

If you’re raising children, fuel both their beliefs and their base. Give them empowering ideas about effort, persistence, and purpose, but also strive to provide stability and opportunity—the soil in which confidence can grow.

If you’re an adult still writing your story of success, it’s not too late.

You can re-parent yourself—by installing new beliefs, upgrading your habits, and seeking circumstances that match your ambitions.

“It is never too late to be what you might have been.” — George Eliot

In the end, success is neither luck alone nor willpower alone. It’s the creative partnership between who you are and where you are.

If it matters to you, you might like to master your behaviours, improve your conditions, and you’ll expand what’s possible in both.
