What You Are Responsible For
By Shazad
"Take responsibility for your work, your results, and your growth. No one else will."
Jack Canfield
There are many things going on in the world, and it’s easy to blame ourselves for not doing something about it, speaking up, or changing the situation. The truth is, many things are not up to us, and we cannot actually make the required changes by ourselves. So what do we do? What is our responsibility in life?
We are accountable for what we do and how we respond. The word responsibility can be defined as the state or fact of having a duty to deal with something or to exercise control over someone.
The reality is that we have a duty to ourselves and are responsible for our behaviour at the end of the day, not what someone else says or does, and not something happening 100s or 1000s of miles away. We owe it to ourselves and to our fellow human beings to behave well, no matter what the external situation is. We have to raise our hands and say, I can do my part about some things in my life.
It’s very easy to say and even write, but very difficult to actually do. Day after day. Week after week, for the rest of your life. Perhaps that’s the whole point. To realize we have responsibilities, not just freedoms and comfort. The latter joys of life are made possible because we recognize and carry out our duty each day as responsible human beings.
We can ignore, reject, or even hide from those things within our circle of influence because they are uncomfortable or challenging. Doing so makes us more responsible for the outcomes that occur when we do not carry out our duties.
By ignoring our health, we become ill and, over time, a burden to our family. We also contribute to the healthcare crisis across nations and around the world. This illustrates how we can either ignore issues or play our part in preventing them from getting worse. A similar case can be made for how we handle our finances, education, and cleanliness around our home and property. We cannot fix the economy, solve the problems in schools, or address climate change single-handedly, but we can avoid making things worse in the short run. Through consistent, positive efforts on our part, we will realize benefits in our personal lives and, ultimately, see improvements in the world.
Being a good human being today or at any point in time requires a clear and honest understanding of where our responsibilities lie. Mature and wise people realize that their lives revolve around their duties to themselves and their responsibilities to others, even to the natural world around them. There is no escaping our links to each other and all living things. While many things are out of our control and always will be, a few things are actually up to us. Let’s remember that and carry on with the best of efforts and intentions. Raise your hand and do your part today.
