What Do You Really Want In Your Life Right Now?
By Ahsan
“You are what your deep, driving desire is. As your desire is, so is your will. As your will is, so is your deed.“
> Brihadaranyaka Upanishad
What exactly do you really want?
If you have to think about it, you may not truly know yet.
Most people have only a vague idea of what they want.
But could it be better—and more useful—to know exactly what you want and why you want it?
In Vedic philosophy, this is the power of sankalpa: a clear, heartfelt resolve.
Modern psychology agrees that precise goals and specific plans are more likely to be achieved than vague wishes.
Research on implementation intentions shows that defining when, where, and how you will act substantially improves goal attainment.
Declare it precisely!
Creating an exact declaration of what you want is a more definitive way to achieve it.
It would be silly to say, “I want to make more money” or “I want to get healthy” without being precise!
How much money? How much weight? Over what timeframe?
It also helps to learn how others have done it. Study what they did, then test whether their approach works for you.
If you find a great idea that doesn’t work, get smart: abandon the failed approach and move toward something that works.
Be smart about pursuing your goals by protecting your effort from distractions and disengaging from unproductive actions.
This reminds me of a friend who once told me she wanted “more peace.” For years, nothing changed.
Then she wrote: “I want to walk 30 minutes every morning, call one friend each week, and sleep by 10:30 p.m.”
Within a month, she said her life felt lighter. She had not discovered a secret; she had finally named what she wanted.
Let’s get to it with a seven-day practice:
Here is your action step: do an old-fashioned journal entry. Write down what you want using paper and pen, then say it out loud. Say it 10 times—or 20 or 30. The point is not to force the universe; it is to make your intention unmistakably clear to yourself.
Give yourself seven days of doing this, then notice how it affects your progress. On the eighth day, you may or may not get exactly what you wanted, but the process will help manifest it.
Your job is to find the means and take the simple actions that move you towards what you want.
Do not become happy or unhappy based on results, taking your time at all for a long time.
If you are very attached to the outcome, you may be going in the wrong direction because you are trying to force something to happen.
If it is good for you and meant to happen, it will happen.
But how could it happen if you never articulated it to yourself in the first place?
Call to action: Today, take five quiet minutes. Write one precise sentence beginning with: “I want…”
Then say it aloud ten times, and take one small action that proves you mean it.
