How Well Do You Take Care Of Yourself?

By Ahsan

"Your thoughts shape your reality; be mindful of the story you tell yourself."

In everyday situations, we often hear the phrase “take care of yourself.” Usually, it comes at the tail end of a conversation, a parting comment from a friend or loved one. But what exactly are you taking care of? Is it your health? Your well-being? Your precious belongings?

Moreover, is this advice simply to do the best you can for yourself, or is it also a reminder to protect yourself from the potential harms of the outside world? The meaning can shift based on tone and context, hinting at both self-care and vigilance against external threats.

What I want to highlight is that taking care of ourselves is a personal responsibility. We need to approach self-care with great attention to our thoughts and feelings. Our mental landscape influences how we care for ourselves, and this attentiveness can be transformative.

Throughout the day, we experience a constant stream of thoughts about our actions and circumstances. Some thoughts are random, others neutral, but many can be negative. These negative thoughts often lead to unnecessary feelings of anxiety and stress. For instance, why should you worry about the weather next week if you’re planning a picnic? If it rains, you can postpone it or bring a portable tent cover. Why concern yourself with what someone at work might think of you? Often, they may not even be thinking about you negatively at all; it’s just a story we tell ourselves.

The key point I wish to convey is that self-care is about where you consciously choose to focus your attention. It’s essential to take care of yourself, but that doesn’t mean getting trapped in overthinking. Perhaps taking care of yourself means learning to step aside and allow life to unfold without the weight of unnecessary worry.

In embracing this perspective, we recognize our responsibility to be attentive to our thoughts and how they impact our self-care. Mindfulness in our thinking can lead to a healthier, more balanced life.

Different cultures emphasize self-care in various ways, often reflecting their values and perspectives. For example, in Japan, the phrase "Ikigai" refers to a sense of reason for being, highlighting the importance of finding purpose and fulfillment in life. In Spanish-speaking countries, "Cuidado" means "care," reminding us to tend to our well-being and that of others. The Hawaiian concept of "Aloha" embodies love, peace, and compassion, encouraging us to nurture ourselves and our relationships. These expressions resonate deeply, reminding us that self-care is a universal need.

As you reflect on your own self-care practices, I encourage you to harness the power of your thoughts as a tool, rather than allowing them to become a problem. Be mindful of what occupies your mind, and take responsibility for your mental landscape. Prioritize your well-being and cultivate a self-care practice that resonates with you.

Take care of yourself – not just in words, but in the actions you choose to nurture your mind, body, and spirit.
